Press Release: University of Guyana’s Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Law, apologises; single outstanding grade to be available by next week

Thursday, January 30, 2025 - 13:54

The University of Guyana notes with deep regret and concern the letter to the editor by an anonymous writer regarding a single long-outstanding grade in the Department of Law. The Department of Law and the Faculty of Social Sciences have collectively apologised to the affected students and assured the Vice-Chancellor once again that the series of unfortunate circumstances which have led to this inexcusable situation will be rectified by the beginning of next week.

It should be noted that the University hosts over 2,500 courses a semester and over 5,000 courses a year, 94% of which are graded and posted on time. However, for various reasons, some grades may still be late. These gaps are continually being investigated and addressed as the University’s Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Engagement, responsible for quality assurance, perfects its systems and Faculty-level oversight.

Notwithstanding the unfortunate illogical leap from a single instance to impugn the entire law programme made by the anonymous letter writer, the University of Guyana wishes to note that the graduates of its law programme have consistently performed in the top 10 of the Hugh Wooding Law School over the last 10 years.

Guyanese students frequently rank among the top graduates at Hugh Wooding, securing prizes and honours for their academic achievements. This is because the University of Guyana's law programme consistently provides a solid foundation for students, preparing them well for the rigours of legal education at Hugh Wooding at the lowest possible cost regionally.

To name a few recent examples of outstanding graduates:

  • Chevy Devonish (2019): Valedictorian, winner of the Trinidad and Tobago Securities and Exchange Commission Clash of the Debate Titans National Tertiary Debate Competition, and winner of the school's Parliamentary Debate Competition.

  • Rondelle Keller: Best graduating student, Certificate of Merit, Anand Ramlogan Prize, Council Prize, Chairman's Prize, and participant in the Stetson International Environmental Moot Court Competition.

  • Michael Munroe: Principal's Roll of Honour, Book Specialist's Prize, Guyana Government Prize, winner of the 11th Annual Caribbean Court of Justice Law Moot, and participant in the American Caribbean Law Initiative at Stetson University.

  • Rea Harris (2023): Valedictorian, Mediation Board of Trinidad & Tobago Prize for Excellence in Mediation Studies, Book Specialists Prize for Best Overall Performance, and Book Specialists Prize for Second Outstanding Year II Student.

In 2024,  Professor Kenneth Benjamin, current Head of the University of Guyana’s Department of Law in the Faculty of Social Sciences, was honoured for his distinguished career in the legal field and extensive contributions to law and justice at the institution's 50th-anniversary celebrations.
